I’m not a bookworm and I don’t remember the last time I purchased fiction … it must have been five years since I glued to computer screen and ditched books but I still cherish what I have. I keep my books organized and tidy. So just for the records I made a quick video about the things on my bookshelf.
You might notice that I deliberately missed few very popular books such as freakonomics by Steven Levitt or Rich dad Poor dad by Robert Kiyosaki. I tried to cover the books which are rare and not much known. Now, of course there’re some GMAT & MBA related books here but I’ve talked in depth about those; it’s not a GMAT books review video by the way. (maybe some other time).

I know you would not understand my accent well, so here’s commentary/ transcript:

Let’s see what’s on my bookshelf: Starting from the top what you’re seeing, right now, here are some over-sized books. It’s an encyclopedia of engineering workshop in Marathi language. It’s rare and one of a kind book, but it’s not well marketed and distributed so it’s not much popular or easily available. Second: it’s visual encyclopedia- good for kids, informative, entertaining.
RC 2- chemical engineering; (Richardson & Coulson’s Chemical Engineering Volume 2) it’s very important book for your graduation studies in chemical engineering. I bought it for fifty rupees (50 Rs.), the retail price is actually about four thousand Rupees (4,000 Rs.) but I bought it from the ‘withdrawn-section’ of British library.
…Then again few workshop handbooks- comes handy for gears manufacturers and workshop owners in general.

These three books- actually it was a big thick book- Unit Operations by McCabe & Smithbut I tore it into three parts for easy reading.
…Then again few chemical engineering books from my college days.
OK. Let me open the window… yeah, it’s much better now.
Then there’re some magazines that I subscribe,
Entreprenuer… they just arrived, India, last year. Then, chemical engineering world by Jasubai media. Again some engg & business related magazines that I subscribe.

Below here are some English aid books: Reader’s Digest How to write and speak better- very interesting book. Then webster’s thesuarus; my favourite Oxfard Advanced learner’s dictionary. Then, it’s reverse dictionary, Marathi-English Then vocabulary, grammar. And then, it’s a pocket dictionary, my sister bought it for like ten Rupees. Then there’re some fictions & non-fictions & fiction: Sherlock Homes’ hardbound complete all stories. Then, I haven’t read most of these books… recently started Papillon.
OK.
And below here; I’ve got some GMAT books, MBA preparation books and Management… Kotler Keller’s, & 10 day MBA, yeah I recommed this highly for those who don’t want to do MBA or those who don’t want to spend two years studying MBA. Then, Jack Welch, Tony Robbins, ok, Jack Welch again.
So I’ve got telephone and a diary. And below here’ I’ve go fax machine and printer- ‘all in one’.
And here we’ve got another gem from Reader’s Digest- it’s a ‘complete Do it yourself manual’ for construction. It’s a box-book; in first part it has got theory and instructions, how-tos and second part is project gelleries. So all projects with nice pictures are in this section & theory and how tos are here. It’s nice, it’s a gem.
That’s it nothing else to show, thanks for watching.

This blog post about recommended books was long overdue, I have been asked about books and material several times by GMAT students, so I thought, I should write a special article exclusively for it.

That page, for GMAT books recommendations and review is finally up; (yep, the same page you can access through nav bar above!!) Still there’re some more books I should review. I will do it once I get more time for this. Thanks for the patience.

I’d also write review for beyong GMAT phase (that is MBA admission, b-school research & life at b schools phase) There’re plenty of books out there which are worth reading even if you’re still at GMAT prep phase.

Stay tuned for more reviews

As promised earlier I’ll make it available for public & probably host it on beat The GMAT Forums or on del.icio.us.

I checked delicious bookmarking tool after quite long time & I am surprised to see the new looks of the site. It’s revamped.

Each & all links will be hand-picked. I’ll also a small review about the scholarship or whatever on offering. I think to do this delicious is the best & effective tool. Stay tuned & keep eye on MBA scholarship bookmarks link. haha, right now I have just added my couple of blogs for testing. Soon the it’ll be flooding. (still I’ll make sure to post quality content)

I am bit confuse as to where & how I should publish this information. If you have any opinion please drop me a comment or post a reply at suggestion & feedback thread at BTG forums.

And I have returned to day dreaming. Return to aim WSC (cough! Wharton Stanford Columbia). I had said earlier and mentioned in my description line of the blog as well that I am no more aiming for Stanford GSB. Well! and I had my reasons for that. I know it’s unusual & who doesn’t want to have MBA degree from such prestigious and one of the best b-schools in the world? I assessed myself and realized that I am not a good fit for Stanford GSB culture. I think I don’t deserve it.

But recent news made me think about my decision again. I know again this time I may not be one the firsts who knew about this scholarships’ (/ fellowship ) announcement. So I ask, & who doesn’t want a full-ride for Stanford anyways.
Reliance Industries has announced and The Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship. It’s a FULL RIDE scholarship, meaning your tuition fees will be waived INCLUDING all your other expenses such as living at Stanford university, schooling, boarding, books etc; virtually all expenses associated to applying and attending stanford MBA (so, does that include GMAT fees as well??).

The scholarship is need-based & academics of the applicant will be considered in scrutinizing candidates. But the most emphasis will be given to the applicant’s interest in India and her willingness to work in India post-MBA. The conditions for Reliance Stanford scholarship are: Applicants if given the scholarship have to come to India in 2/3 year post-MBA for at least 2/3 years.

The selection process involves two phases. At first phase 50 candidates will be shortlisted & will be allowed to apply to Stanford University for traditional two year MBA program. Stanford will select at the most five candidates from fifty by their .
There has never been such a huge scholarship for any international applicants earlier. It is obvious to think that it would lead to more applications from Indian origin and hence selection process at Stanford would be tough still. But I think it would not be the case. First of all, Reliance candidates are entirely different pool and Stanford made it sure that they will not allocate more than five seats for fifty selected applicants. And even for Reliance Stanford scholarship applicants’ gang, I think it’s difficult to get through in first fifty. As mentioned in official website the candidates will be short-listed on need-base. It is the kind of bread which is difficult to get in India these days. With all India-shining and raining jobs, the average income of person from 20/30 age group has raised tremendously in a decade. Incidentally these very people want career upgradation, want to excel and hence want to join MBA programs of international stature. And the pool of youth who’s actually financially poor is not even aware of such MBA programs.
Still I hope Reliance will be successful in finding the best candidates in all the terms they demand. The last question stuck in my mind is whether this scholarship is genuine? I mean why should I be happy & so all prospective India MBA aspirants if the scholarship is not for those who genuinely qualify for it? I hope and pray it should all be white and transparent. But wouldn’t it be the scheme of Reliance with hidden interest? …the scheme: to make Indian ministers and bureaucrats happy by offering their sons/daughters an MBA degree from Stanford?
I hope & pray my speculation is absolutely wrong.

As you know already, that I am thinking of applying to IIFT this year. So, I have to hurry and get the application form filled as deadline is nearing. I checked the official site of IIFT
which of course I liked. haahaa not because I am applying there… honestly I am more used to homepage of US MBA programs & it’s very different from them. Simple-Light and Plain!
No flashy pictures and no fluff. Yeah I agree that those flashy homepages look cool and sleek.
This however is much coarse.

I read all instructions and I realised that I HAVE to make a demand draft first and then check with rest of the application.
A demand draft of Rs. 1330 for general candidates and Rs. 700. for minorities/ and if you are a foreign candidate or NRI(non residential Indian)/ NRI-child you’d have to pay $75 for applying.

Couple of days back I went to town to the Bank for DD. But as usual seeing jammed packed (crowded with people ) bank was real turn off. The bank is going through major transformation and so is very troublesome lately. It was obvious that it’d take me at least four hours in queue standing to get the DD. So I chucked the whole plan and came back empty hand.
…Actually this was a wise decision as we have sub-branch of it in our village which hardly has any transaction. I submitted my DD form to the sub-branch & I got the DD next day!
Cool isn’t it! I didn’t have to wait for it standing for four hours.
I was not in hurry so I could afford this.

Now that I had my DD in my hand ready. I again checked IIFT site to apply online…
applying was easy but it said that you should have a printer ready to take out the print of your application which then to be sent to IIFT.
haahhaa & my printer is in my home town so right now I have just copied it for printing it from a stationery store or cyber cafe tomorrow.

Once I take the print out of the application form, I’ll have to send it to IIFT along with the Demand Draft.
I got to keep a close eye to all deadlines:
One thing I like about the website is as soon as I applied online they gave me access to my page through which I could track important informations like deadlines
so here’s a sneak peek’

:

Dont look around, you are right. It’s me. Yes! aim-wsc is thinking of applying to some Indian MBA programmes this year!

surprised? yeah! even I am as surprised as you’re!
I think I must clear this haze around aim-wsc a bit…(OK may be I’ll write an introductory post soon.)

…that’s not the purpose of posting this article… today however, I’ll just talk about my voyage to various Indian MBA programs.
Now you might ask which programs am I thinking of: IIFT. IIFT & IIFT. Right now it’s the only one college I am thinking of applying but soon I’ll reach to some concrete decision.
FMS New Delhi, SP Jain, IIT SOM Mumbai are some of the other colleges I am thinking…

Now the obvious question arises: Why IIMs is not in the list… well for some odd reasons I don’t want to apply there… (not like sour grapes Yeah I know it’s not in my stretch and even if it would’ve I wouldn’t apply there…)

I’ll check it up with PaGaLGuy Forums but surprisingly I get more hits @ CoolAvenues when I searched about any MBA program in India on google… seems they are doing better with SEO and the stuff.
So I’ll check CoolAvenues site too…yeah I should not forget that this site is commercialised even before PaGaLGuY forums/ portal started. Anyway all I need is some information about these institutes which I would use to make a decision whether to apply to their programmes or not.

Well most probably ( according to my instinct) I wont be apply to any of other Indian or international MBA program this year. So it’s gonna be IIFT only.

But I’ll surely come up with some good reasons for the decision that I would make.
